South Africa has announced new electricity regulations that will be put into effect in 2025, this is a large transformation in the way of generating, distributing, and consuming power in the whole country. A more robust transmission framework will make it easier for the electricity produced by private producers to get to the national grid thereby ensuring better coordination and fewer bottlenecks in supply.
Pricing and Tariff Reforms of Electricity
Adjustments to electricity pricing are also going to be made under the 2025 laws. A new tariff system is designed to show the actual use and costs of operations more closely. The pricing based on time-of-use is likely to come into the picture more, with high rates charging during peak hours and low rates at night. The purpose of these changes is to influence consumers to be more efficient in electricity use and consequently alleviate some of the load on the grid.
